Say what you want about Mozart, but Ave Verum Corpus is one of my absolute favorite Latin hymns. We used to sing it all the time in my all-girls high school’s concert choir. I couldn’t find a good SSA version on YouTube, but it’s beautiful with male vocals, too. Anyway, the translated lyrics are so beautiful, I had to share them.
Latin / English:
Ave, ave verum corpus / Hail, true body
natum de Maria virgine / born of the Virgin Mary,
Vere passum immolatum / Who truly suffered, sacrificed
In cruce pro homine / on the Cross for man,
Cujus latus perforatum / Whose pierced side overflowed
Unda fluxit et sanguine / with water and blood,
Esto nobis praegustatum / Be for us a foretaste
In mortis examine. / in the test of death.
Those last two lines give me chills.
Have a blessed day!
